Sustainable Packaging-Business Opportunity of ASEAN Plastics Transformation

THE PLASTIC WASTE PROBLEM IN
SOUTHEAST ASIA

The booming plastics and packaging industries in Southeast Asia have created a growing waste problem. According to the investigation of the Marine Protection and Environment Promotion Group and the investigation of "Science Magazine", more than half of the plastic waste eventually flows into the ocean.

These plastic wastes mainly come from China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

At the same time, as China bans the import of most of the world's plastic solid waste in order to develop domestic recycling capacity, Southeast Asia has become a dumping ground for plastic waste in other countries.

Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia have begun to impose import bans on plastic waste, but due to the rise of illegal plastic recycling factories, and even in the process of law enforcement, further legislation is needed to curb this trend.
